Intro

Seattle is a town known for its seafood. But we're also known for our interest in eating sustainably. Here are some events and resources for general seafood cooking-n-eating activities as well as ones specific to sustainability-related issues.

And as I come across sea vegetable-related classes, events, etc., you'll find them on this page as well.

Resources

• In 2009, Traca Savadago put togther a screening of the fishing film “End of the Line." Running through the list of those attendees she assembled for it is a great place to start getting up to speed on the world of Pacific Northwest sustainable seafood:
  • Chef Becky Selengut was the founder of the Seasonal Cornucopia site (now run by John and Patricia Eddy of Cook Local), which has a listing of recommended seafood sources. Also see her book Good Fish for information and delicious recipes.
  • Casson Trenor is the author of the Sustainable Sushi Guide.
  • Jon Rowley has been called a "Disciple of Flavor" by Saveur Magazine, and has had a tremendous impact on the seafood world. For more information on this very interesting guy, this Seattle Times article is a good start.
  • Shauna MacKinnon helped created the SeaChoice sushi card and works as Marketing Director for Living Oceans.
• You can also see the website for End of the Line (trailer below) to check for other screenings. They have a sustainable seafood widget you can embed into your own blog or website.
• For more general information, you can also see the book Bottomfeeder and of course, Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch (which is also on Twitter).
• For general, non-edibly-focused edification about the critters of the sea, Seattle Parks and Rec offers tide walks that are often good for the little ones. Search under the "Science, Nature and Environment" section.
• For outdoors edible activities, check out the Washington State Dept. of Fishing and Shellfishing for seasons and licensing info.
