Important site user note

Due to the volume of events covered, cancelations, sold out and full events might not always be updated in the calendar or old blog posts. Please always check directly with the event venue (links to venues or original postings are at the bottom of calendar entries or linked via the event name in blog posts) to ensure the event is still scheduled and available.

Scandinavian Food & Cooking

Intro

While Scandinavian food might not be quite as popular as, say, French, Italian & Asian, thanks to Seattle's Northern European heritage, we still have many opportunities to enjoy the cuisine.

Click here for recent blog posts tagged with this topic, including late 2010's Scandinavian Food Week with cooking videos from local Sons of Norway, a report from a visit from Rene Redzepi of Copenhagen's Noma (the 2010 "Best Restaurant in the World), and more!

Scandinavian Food Resources

  • Scandinavian Specialties – offers products from throughout the region, like lutefisk, Danish smoked eel, lingonberry jam, Norwegian chocolates, and more.
  • Sadly, closed.Scandinavian Bakery – they don’t have an online presence that I can find, but they have excellent ratings on Yelp for their marzipan cake, and on Cakespy for their French (oops) waffles.
  • Larsen’s Danish Bakery – offers the traditional Danish Kringle (“Flaky layers of Danish filled with almond paste and raisins, shaped into a pretzel, just before it is baked, it is topped with sugar and sliced almonds.”)
  • IkeaMy goal with this site is not to publicize super-big companies, they pay people to do that for them. But I do feature Whole Foods and other larger, non-local businesses when I think they have a unique thing that might be useful to readers. So in this case, I have to say that Ikea does have Scandinavian foodstuffs for sale, and they are often very reasonably priced.

Scandinavian Cultural Resources

Don’t see something in the calendar that appeals to you but are curious about the culture of the region? Check out these organizations. Their websites often have their own calendar with even more events beyond the food ones I list.

Swedish Pancake Breakfast Music

Every month, the Swedish Cultural Center puts on a very reasonably-priced community pancake breakfast. Here's a quick video of the music and dancing that accompanies the meal.
