Due to the volume of events covered, cancelations, sold out and full events might not always be updated in the calendar or old blog posts. Please always check directly with the event venue (links to venues or original postings are at the bottom of calendar entries or linked via the event name in blog posts) to ensure the event is still scheduled and available.
Food for Health, Gluten-Free Cooking & Other Special Diets
Intro
Poster via Lise the LoserMost people who have ever gone on a weight loss diet know that unnaturally restricting what you eat usually winds up having the opposite of the desired effect.
But what if restricting what you eat isn’t really an option? For those with gluten allergies, diabetes, heart disease or other food-related health conditions, a special diet is a key ingredient to health and general well-being.
Fortunately, in Seattle, we have many resources available to help folks eat for good health in such a way that it can feel more like a celebration of food rather than a restriction.
Some of these resources might seem a little obvious to the in-the-know foodie, but I wanted to still try to be complete in case someone might be newly-diagnosed and feeling overwhelmed with where to start.
I’m including some vegan and kosher resources as those might be helpful for those with dairy allergies, even if you are not necessarily concerned with the religious or ethical underpinnings of those movements. Both vegan/vegetarian and raw diets have their own page on this site, so check those for more information.
Of course, no post on food allergies – and certainly not one for a Seattle site – would be complete without a mention of the Gluten-Free Girl blog and book. She also has a “Recommends” section for products and places she likes.
Karen Helde is a Seattle-area blogger with a blog about gluten-free cooking called Fickle Feast.
Jeanne Sauvage writes the Art of Gluten-Free Bakingblog and covers her experience with gluten-free cooking. I've had her baking and it's amazing!
See Julie Negrin’s blog for healthy eating info, especially for those of you with little ones. She also offers classes in the area, they are added to the calendar as I see them, but also check out her site for more info.
Johanna Dietz is a local nutritionist who offers counseling and teaches at PCC, including gluten-free classes.
Earlier this year, Michael Natkin at Herbivoracious and Becky Selengut from Chef Reinvented posted perspectives and important details about eating out with food allergies.
Contact me if you have a Puget Sound-area event to submit to this calendar or Puget Sound-based blog/site to add to the resources. This page also has limited advertising opportunities for local businesses, contact for rates and details.
