New year, new food: vegetarian & vegan food

Image via Flickr user Gezellig GirlIt's a new year, and many people are making dietary changes, for weight loss or health reasons, or just to reset after the overindulgence of the holiday. This week, I'm listing events and resources related to some different ways of eating. Next up: going gluten-free. (Previously in this series: raw food events and resourceseating light and healthy, and going gluten-free.)

Going full vegan, or just meatless on Meatless Mondays? As a person who does not eat very much meat, I can confirm from experience that you don't have to sacrifice flavor and satisfaction when transitioning to this way of eating. But it does help to know a few tricks. The below calendar has cooking classes and other vegetarian and vegan events to help you on your meat-free way.

Resources

  • Michael Natkin's Herbivoracious has delicious-looking and sophisticated recipes. He also offers restaurant reviews that can help a vegetarian navigate non-vegetarian restaurants.
  • Follow VeganScore on Twitter for updates on the Seattle vegan scene.
  • Vegetarians of WA. Each spring, they put on the VegFest Vegetarian Festival.
  • VegSeattle, a resource site that also offers a PDF restaurant guide.
  • Seattle Vegan
  • If you want to get out and meet more veggie folks, there are a whole bunch of Seattle-area Meetup groups for vegetarians...single ones, women, families, LGBT, music or movie lovers, outdoor adventurers...
