Flavors of fall: soups and stews
Image via Flickr user TheBittenWordI know my fellow sun-starved Seattleites might be dreading the changing of the season, but I have something to make the prospect of cooler weather more appealing: fall food. Pumpkins, apples, pies, hearty fare...there's a lot to look forward to on our plates, at least.
So as our culinary thoughts to turn to the flavors of the cooler seasons, I'm going to be posting some mini-calendars and recipe round-ups focused on fall-related food events over the next few days.
First up: soups and stews! Check out some recipes from our Seattle food community, and then see the calendar of cooking classes for picking up even more ideas.
Recipes from the Seattle food blog world...
- Mikaela at Baguette Taste - Wonder Bread Budget has perfected (for now) her Chicken, Rice and Vegetable Soup.
- Langdon Cook recently posted a High Tide Soup on Fat of the Land. It has a broth made with salmon backbone and butter-poached "sea creatures." (Read the post to see why there are quotes there.)
- Sig at Live to Eat offers up a Spinach, Fennel, White Bean Soup in Light Coconut Milk.
- What's more deliciously fall than pumpkin? Alice at Savory Sweet Life has a Pumpkin Black Bean Soup Recipe with Ham Hocks.
- I can't wait to make this Yogurt and Oregano Pesto Soup from Dana at DanaTreat.
- Here's one of my personal favorite soup recipes, for Red Lentil Soup with Harissa Paste and Smoked Paprika.
- And Michael at Herbivoracious has a recipe for an Umami-Packed Vegetarian Broth (that can also be modified to use as a stock). My early years as a vegetarian were marked by a vague dissatisfaction caused by a lack of umami in the food I made, so I can vouch for the value of a recipe such as this for anyone looking to go more or totally meatless.

Fall really has arrived here, hasn't it? Even if the colors haven't turned, the weather has. What's better than warm comfort in a bowl on a cold day? I can't wait to try some of these other fabulous recipes. Thank you so much!
Agreed! I eat soup all year 'round (my house is cold so it supports me in my habit) but there's something about the weather coordinating with it that makes it all the better.
