Can It Forward! Canning, preserving & sharing the knowledge

This weekend is National Can It Forward Day, a creation of Jarden Home Brands (who are the makers of Ball and Kerr products) and Canning Across America (who are a group of canning enthusiasts, including a whole bunch of local Seattle folks).

The day will include a series of live demos at Pike Place Market. You can either come on down yourself, or check out the live stream online! And you might catch sight of me as I assist my friend Brook Hurst Stephens of Learn To Preserve, as she'll be doing the noon demo of tomato canning.

The fun will continue on Sunday with more demos, kicking of CAA's Can-a-Rama week. If you can't can this weekend, but would like to learn more about preserving, you can can another time! Check out the calendar of canning and preserving classes and demos at the Canning, Pickling and Preserving A La Carte page. In addition to the regularly updated calendar, there are also other canning resources on that page, so bookmark it for all your canning adventures.

Brook got the canning-it-forward concept started early this summer, as she took an evening to teach a preserving class to some of the residents at the Jubilee Women's Center. I've been there a couple times to cook a community meal (more info on that volunteering opportunity here), so I tagged along with Brook to help with the class and take some photos. Check out the slideshow below.

And full disclosure: I believe I am being paid by Ball to assist Brook on Saturday. I will have to update this once I a) confirm I am actually being paid and b) figure out who it is that's paying me! I hope the fact that I am confused on this point drives home that it has no bearing on the content of this post, other than, obviously, the fact that this italicized paragraph exists at all.
