Seattle Mother's Day 2010! Food Events & Ideas for Those on a Budget
Rose @ S. Seattle Community CollegeMother’s Day: it’s coming. Sunday, May 9. If you are looking for event or gift ideas for your mom or a mom in your life, check out the calendar below for some other ideas, classes, brunches, etc. Also see the round-ups from CitySearch and Keren Brown aka Frantic Foodie.
And let’s face it, even though mom is the person to splurge on, the grim reality is many of us are on pretty tight budgets nowadays. But you know what? That’s okay! If anyone will understand, it’s your mom. I would venture to guess that most moms would rather you spend some time than some dimes.
So I’m also including some Freeattle free event ideas on the calendar (in addition to the food ones marked FREE!), and here are a few other free or inexpensive ways you could enjoy the day with your moms if you are pinching pennies but want to show the love.
- Check out the Washington Arboretum Park (free) and the Japanese Garden within ($5). Update! The Arboretum is offering a few special things for Mom's Day including free family photos, tours, and crafts. 1-4 p.m.
- Kubota Gardens (free) is also a great spot for a beautiful walk and maybe a picnic.
- The South Seattle Community College Arboretum (free) is a beautiful little ramble (pictures here), with a rose garden (not sure what blooming stage it will be at, but it’s all pretty anyway).
- The Highline Botanical Garden (free) is also a lovely little walk. (Pictures here.)
- If your mom loves the outdoors and nature, you could take her on one of the Seattle Art Museum’s free guided walking tours of the Olympic Sculpture Museum (free).
- Mom loves culture and history? You can also print free passes for two from the King County Library System for Bellevue’s Art Museum, the Tacoma Washington State History Museum, and the Museum of History and Industry. If you go to MOHAI, you could pack a lovely picnic and eat it at the Arboretum before or after heading over to the museum. (To print a pass, search on “Museum” in the KCLS calendar, select the day and register. Print the pass from there or have it emailed to you.)
- NEW! The Weyerhauser Bonsai Collection, which has been closed, will be open for a special free exhibit, and on Mother's Day Weekend, will offer free guided tours.
So I hope between this and the other listings, you find just the right event to celebrate Mom!
