Food Event Weekend Highlights 10/23-10/25

And to work up an appetite before hitting a food event, why not a walk through our city gardens like the Arboretum (FREE!), Japanese Garden at the Arboretum ($5) or Kubota Gardens (FREE!)? If you haven’t been to one in the past few weeks, this might be the last few days for seeing fall foliage before it drops.
Friday, October 23
- FREE! Food Film: The Last Beekeeper. “With Evan Sugden, PhD and lecturer at the University of Washington will be joining us to answer questions and he’ll be bringing honey from his hives for a honey tasting! Bees are vanishing. Examining the enormity of this loss, Jeremy Simmons' documentary The Last Beekeeper follows the lives of three commercial beekeepers (from South Carolina, Montana, and Washington) over the course of a year as they struggle with Colony Collapse Disorder.” Donations accepted. (Wallingford, 7pm)

- FREE! Mushroom Walk at Bridle Trails State Park. “Explore the diversity of fungi in the park’s forest, and learn how to identify them from one of the region’s leading experts. Learn the names of different fungi, the important roles they play in forest ecosystems, and how fungi contribute to overall biological diversity.” (9am-12pm)
- FREE! Healthy Cooking on a Budget Workshop at Rainier Beach Community Center. (11am)
- Apple Harvest at Dog Mountain Farm. “Help make apple cider and apple butter! Buy fresh apples, cider, and produce. Farm tour, activities for the kids, and horse-drawn hay rides (weather permitting).” (12-5pm)
- FREE! Fruits of the Fall at Discovery Park. “Ages 8 and older Explore the intriguing, colorful, slimy world of fleshy fungi. Children must be accompanied by an adult.” (1-3pm)
- FREE! Readers to Eaters: Explore the Fall Harvest at Richmond Beach Library. “Learn about some of the wonderful Fall harvest in the Puget Sound region--such as apples, potatoes and pumpkins--presented by Master Gardeners or by local chefs and farmers. The audience will also be introduced to many related books.” (2-3:30pm)
- Use Your Fruit! Fruit Tree Tutorial. “Do you have a fruit tree in your backyard? Are you curious about the best way to keep that fruit through the winter? Come to Carkeek for a fun, hands-on tutorial and you’ll find creative ways to preserve your fruit.” $15 (2:30pm)
- Fall Norwegian Bazaar at Leif Erickson Lodge. Traditional Norwegian food, bakery, crafts, gifts, beer garden and entertainment. (10am-7pm)
